Ravichandran Ashwin claimed 3/27 as India inched closer towards the victory at the end of Day 3 of the second test in Mumbai on Sunday.

Resuming at 69/0, Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara added 38 more runs before the former was caught at long off by Will Young off Ajaz Patel for 62.

Pujara fell 3 run shot of a well deserved fifty as he edged a Patel delivery to Ross Taylor at slips.

The pair of Shubman Gill along with skipper Virat Kohli added 82 runs for the third wicket before the former slashed one to short cover to give Rachin Ravindra his maiden test wicket.

Shreyas Iyer was stumped by a brilliant piece of bowling by Ajaz for 14.

Kohli looked good in his innings of 36 before dragging a Ravindra delivery onto his stumps.

Wriddhiman Saha (13) in quest of some quick runs perished caught at long on by Kyle Jamieson.

Axar Patel scored a quickfire unbeaten 41 as India declared their second innings at 276/7. His knock came off 26 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes.

Ajaz Patel was once again New Zealand best bowler with figures of 4/106, while Rachin Ravindra claimed 3 wickets.

Chasing 540, Ravichandran Ashwin drew first blood by trapping New Zealand skipper Tom Latham right in front for 6.

Will Young (20) looked solid for a brief while, before being caught at short leg by substitute fielder Surya Kumar Yadav off Ashwin.

Ross Taylor’s (6) horror run with the bat continued as he miscued a slog sweep to Pujara.

The pair of Daryl Mitchell and Henry Nicholls stitched together a solid 73 run stand for the fourth wicket before Axar broke the stand by dismissing the former caught at deep cover by Jayant Yadav for a well made 60.

Tom Blundell was run out following a horrible mix-up with Nicholls for a duck as the visitors slumped to 129/5.

Nicholls (36*) and Rachin Ravindra (2*) were unbeaten at the crease as New Zealand ended Day 3 at 140/5, still requiring an improbable target of 400 runs.
