Jos Buttlerā€™s defiant knock of 26 off 207 balls went in vain as England went down by 275 runs against Australia in the second Test at Adelaide on Monday.

Resuming at a overnight score of 82/4, the visitors lost the wicket of Ollie Pope in the third over of the day to Mitchell Starc.

Ben Stokes long stay at the crease came to an end as he was trapped leg before wicket by Nathan Lyon for 12.

The pair of Buttler and Chris Woakes resurrected the innings with a solid 61 run stand for the seventh wicket before Jhye Richardson broke the partnership by castling the latter for 44.

Ollie Robinson edged a Nathan Lyon delivery to Steve Smith at slip leaving England reeling at 178/8.

In the final session of play, Richardson then dismissed both Buttler and James Anderson to complete his maiden five wicket haul, as Australia thumped England by 275 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Marnus Labuschagne was declared the Man of the Match.
