MS Dhoni will return to the Indian dressing room for the first time after the 2019 World Cup semi-finals. The most successful Indian captain will take over as the mentor team for the T20 World Cup.
In announcing the BCCI-hosted tournament lineup in the United Arab Emirates and Oman on October 17, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized that Duny has agreed to only participate in major events.
“As far as Mahendra Singh Dhoni is concerned, I talked to him when I was in Dubai. He agreed with my decision and agreed to be the mentor of the Indian team only in the T20 World Cup. I I also discussed this issue with my colleagues,” Shah said during his first formal interaction with the media after taking over as BCCI secretary in October 2019.
“I talked with the captain and deputy captain and coach Ravi Shastri. They are all on the same page, and that’s why this matter came to a conclusion.”
Dhoni’s appointment time-head coach Shastri’s tenure will end after the T20 World Cup-is bound to make people doubt whether the World Cup champion captain’s tenure in the Indian team will continue. However, as Shah emphasized, the current arrangement only applies to the T20 World Cup.
Although the national team will have a mentor for the first time, it is not the first time that the head coach will hold a leadership position in the team management. During Donny’s tenure as captain, Shastri served as the team director and Duncan Fletcher served as the head coach of the 2015 World Cup.
The emergence of Dhoni is likely to be of great help to team management in the UAE. Despite the unprecedented global success in the test arena, the world championship title in the restricted competition system failed to obtain the captain-coach combination of Kohli-Shastri.
In fact, it was Duny who won the last ICC championship for India-the 2013 Championship trophy. This is the third time Duny has won the world championship as the captain of India after the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 T50 World Cup.
Duny hopes to have a great impact on the players and help India regain the T20 World Cup.
